Innovation is required for the transition to important social issues, Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0, and the achievement of SDGs. To that end, it is said that the engagement of human resources with artistic (creative) abilities in addition to literature and sciences is indispensable as that can be already seen from the wide spread of design thinking in various fields. On the other hand, while the importance of Sciences, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM) Education has been already recognized and the necessity of reviewing education advocated by the education community, special fields overcoming the vertical splits and points of recovery for academic "overallness” is yet to emerge. This time, we invited two distinguished guests, Dr. Jay Labov and Professor Susan Albertine, who consecutively lead the American Higher Science Education and the American Liberal Arts Education. We will hold this symposium to consider the questions like "What kind of education to have in Japanese universities and graduate schools?” and “How to foster advanced and innovative human resource?”
