Health inequalities have been important in research and policy in the UK for several decades. Descriptive and analytical evidence on health inequalities in the UK will be reviewed, drawing on official statistics and cohort studies. Some thoughts on the changing Japanese public health context will be presented as a stimulus for discussion.
